Gretchen Wharton, Shaw resident

“I grew up in a house on the 500 block of S Street, NW, which my parents had purchased in 1946. I remember my parents sharing with me that the previous owner told them that so many bones were found when the basement of the house was excavated.

Many years later, I learned that where I grew up was on part of a square block that was the original site of the Columbian Harmony Cemetery.

I still feel sad that this historic site remains unrecognized as a special place in the District of Columbia.”
